That’s because the survey found one in five UK adults have no back-up plan if their wage suddenly stopped as a result of accident, sickness or unemployment, or if the main breadwinner died.
The knock-on effects could be disastrous, it is claimed, with one in eight parents responsible for financially supporting at least one adult child and one in 20 also having a parent or in-law relying on their income.
Paul Havenhand, head of insurance at the Post Office, said: “It is vital people take steps to protect themselves, especially when you consider that so many people may be reliant on the same source of income.”
