That's according to new figures from the Money Advice Service.

Who also reveal that two-thirds (66%) of people without savings admit to being anxious about how they would cover unexpected costs.

A quarter of those polled would either be forced into debt or to extend existing borrowings to cover such a circumstance, according to the survey.

The Money Advice Service, set up by the government to offer free and impartial financial information, claims that 71% of UK homes experienced unforeseen costs or bills in 2013.

Car repairs, optician's costs and technology repairs/replacements were the most common cause, the poll found.
