Jetting off for the Christmas hols? Make sure your travel policy protects the presents you've packed.
That's the advice of travel insurance expert, Beth Macer, who explains that lost, damaged or stolen gifts may not necessarily be covered.

For peace of mind, she suggests reading the policy wording carefully before heading away with a Santa's sack of stuff and, if necessary, leaving some behind or upgrading the cover.

Macer adds: "Most insurers won't cover fragile items such as china and glass, household goods and alcohol, and they won't cover valuables that were not being carried as hand luggage, so it is important to read the policy small print before you travel with gifts, to ensure you are adequately covered."

To avoid claims delays or refusals, she also recommends that policyholders have proof of damage (keep the item to send to your insurer) and that they hold on to receipts to easily establish how much the gift was worth.
