Macer adds: "Most insurers won't cover fragile items such as china and glass, household goods and alcohol, and they won't cover valuables that were not being carried as hand luggage, so it is important to read the policy small print before you travel with gifts, to ensure you are adequately covered."
To avoid claims delays or refusals, she also recommends that policyholders have proof of damage (keep the item to send to your insurer) and that they hold on to receipts to easily establish how much the gift was worth.
