  • Why might I need it?

    We understand how easily accidents can happen. 

    With this policy you can concentrate on getting better without worrying about the costs incurred. Need help around the house or a taxi to the supermarket? You can use the money however you see best to make your recovery quick and stress free.

    If the worst were to happen the policy could help provide for your family too. The policy includes £20,000 of accidental death cover as well as benefits for injuries resulting in breaks, burns and dislocations.

    For just 55p a day you'll be covered 24 hours a day, both at home and abroad, for up to three claims for accidental injuries in any 12-month period.

    What's more, you can add your partner to your plan – with a 10% saving over 2 single plans. Your partner must be aged 50 to 79 and living with you.

  • What is it?

    50+ Personal Accident Plan cushions the financial impact of an injury by paying out a cash lump sum if you suffer fractures, dislocations, burns or death as a result of an accident.

    These benefits don’t reduce with age and the cover continues until your 85th birthday.

    What is not covered

    If the accident occurs as a result of any of the following:

    • naturally occurring conditions that do not result from an injury,
    • any sickness or disease not directly resulting from injury,
    • suicide or attempted suicide or deliberate self-injury,
    • competing in any kind of race other than on foot or while swimming,
    • diving, underwater diving, mountaineering / rock climbing, potholing or parachuting,
    • flying activity except as a fare paying passenger on a registered commercial airline,
    • motorcycling as a driver or a passenger,
    • being under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or medication that hasn’t been prescribed to you.
    • a break caused by an unhealthy bone does not meet the definition of a fracture and would therefore not be covered by the policy. For example, if you have osteoporosis or any other condition causing unhealthy bones and you trip onto a soft carpet and break a bone, it is likely the bone broke because of your osteoporosis. The policy would therefore not payout. But if you have osteoporosis  or any other condition causing unhealthy bones and break a bone in a nasty car accident where a healthy bone would likely have broken. In that case, your condition played no part in the bone breaking and the policy would therefore payout. Each claim you make will be considered on its own individual circumstances and merits before a full and fair decision is reached.

    For benefits to be payable death must occur within 12 months of the accident. And for injury within 90 days of the accident.

  • Can anyone get covered?

    No. This insurance is designed specifically for older people. UK residents aged 50 to 79 can take out the cover. This includes those currently employed as an offshore worker, seafarer or mariner, whose permanent residence remains in the UK. Acceptance is guaranteed with no medical questions to answer and your policy can continue until your 85th birthday.

     

  • What if I live in the Channel Islands or Isle of Man, can I get cover?

    No. Cover is only available to residents of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

  • How does it work exactly?

    50+ Personal Accident Plan is an insurance policy created to help towards the additional costs you may incur following a fracture, dislocation or serious burn caused by an accident and provide a financial safety net for your family in the event of you suffering a fatal accident.

  • What am I covered for?

    Payment will be made if you suffer an accident causing fracture, dislocation, burns or if you die as a result of an accident. The table below shows full details of the cover available and the benefits payable.

  • Will I be covered for fractures if I have osteoporosis or any other condition causing unhealthy bones?

    If you suffer with osteoporosis or any other condition causing unhealthy bones and your bone breaks due to this, then it would not be covered by your policy. A break caused by an unhealthy bone, or those that are unable to withstand normal stresses, does not meet the definition of a fracture under the policy and would not be covered. The policy covers breaks to a bone that are caused by an accident and which would reasonably cause a healthy bone to break.

    For example, if you have osteoporosis or any other condition causing unhealthy bones and you trip onto a soft carpet and break a bone, it is likely the bone broke because of your osteoporosis. This would not meet the definition of a fracture and the policy would therefore not payout.

    But if you have osteoporosis or any other condition causing unhealthy bones and break a bone in a nasty car accident where a healthy bone would likely have broken then this would meet the definition of a fracture. In that case, your condition played no part in the bone breaking and the policy would therefore payout.

    Each claim you make will be considered on its own individual circumstances and merits before a full and fair decision is reached.

  • What if my medical condition causes an accident?

    The policy wording defines an accident as “A sudden identifiable violent external event that happens by chance and which could not be expected; or unavoidable exposure to severe weather.” If this event were caused by a medical condition, whether diagnosed or not, it would not be considered an accident under the policy and a claim would not be paid.  For example, if a customer blacked out, fell and suffered a fracture, this would not meet the policy definition of an accident and the claim could not be paid.

  • What's the difference between single and joint cover?

    The single policy covers you only. The joint policy covers you and the partner who is living with you as a couple, at the same address, for at least 3 months at the date of their accidental death or injury.

  • What are the age limits of cover?

    You can apply for the cover if you are between 50 and 79 years old and can be covered until your 85th birthday.

  • How much does it cost?

  • Will my premiums go up if I make a claim?

    No.

  • Will my premiums go up as I get older?

    No.

  • When does the cover end?

    All cover under this policy will end:
    • if the premium is not paid when due or within the grace period; or
    • if the policy is cancelled by you or by us; or
    • if the maximum total benefit limit is reached for the policyholder; or
    • on the first premium due date following the policyholder’s 85th birthday; or
    • if the policyholder ceases to be a UK resident; or
    •the death of the policyholder

    whichever occurs first

    If the first premium is not paid when due the policy will be void.

    Cover will end for an insured partner:
    • on their death; or
    • on reaching age 85; or
    • when the insured person who is not the policyholder no longer meets the definition of partner.

    If you do not pay your premium when due or within the grace period, your policy will end automatically at the end of the last month you paid your premium.

  • Does the cover end if I make a claim?

    No. You can make up to 3 claims (per person covered) for accidental injuries in any 12 month period. 

  • What does 'guaranteed acceptance' mean?

    It means that as long as you are a UK resident aged from 50 to 79 you will be accepted for the cover by the insurer with no need to answer medical questions.

  • What if I change my mind?

    You can cancel the policy within 30 days of the start date and we will refund any premiums paid provided you have not made a claim. Following this, you may cancel the policy at any time by giving 7 days notice in writing to Union Insurance Services, 39/51 Highgate Road, London NW5 1RT or by phone on 0343 178 1255 but we will not refund any premiums paid.

What's the difference between single and joint cover?

The single policy covers you only. The joint policy covers you and the partner who is living with you as a couple, at the same address, for at least 3 months at the date of their accidental death or injury.

What are the age limits of cover?

You can apply for the cover if you are between 50 and 79 years old and can be covered until your 85th birthday.

How much does it cost?

For just 55p a day you'll be covered 24 hours a day, both at home and abroad, for up to three claims for accidental injuries in any 12-month period.

What's more, you can add your partner to your plan – with a 10% saving over 2 single plans. Your partner must be aged 50 to 79 and living with you.

Will my premiums go up if I make a claim?

No.

Will my premiums go up as I get older?

No.

When does the cover end?

All cover under this policy will end:
• if the premium is not paid when due or within the grace period; or
• if the policy is cancelled by you or by us; or
• if the maximum total benefit limit is reached for the policyholder; or
• on the first premium due date following the policyholder’s 85th birthday; or
• if the policyholder ceases to be a UK resident; or
•the death of the policyholder

whichever occurs first

If the first premium is not paid when due the policy will be void.

Cover will end for an insured partner:
• on their death; or
• on reaching age 85; or
• when the insured person who is not the policyholder no longer meets the definition of partner.

If you do not pay your premium when due or within the grace period, your policy will end automatically at the end of the last month you paid your premium.

Does the cover end if I make a claim?

No. You can make up to 3 claims (per person covered) for accidental injuries in any 12 month period. 

What does 'guaranteed acceptance' mean?

It means that as long as you are a UK resident aged from 50 to 79 you will be accepted for the cover by the insurer with no need to answer medical questions.

What if I change my mind?

You can cancel the policy within 30 days of the start date and we will refund any premiums paid provided you have not made a claim. Following this, you may cancel the policy at any time by giving 7 days notice in writing to Union Insurance Services, 39/51 Highgate Road, London NW5 1RT or by phone on 0343 178 1255 but we will not refund any premiums paid.
