Travel insurance is a policy that protects you against unexpected events that could affect your trip. This includes issues that happen before you travel like needing to cancel as well as issues while you’re away, such as medical emergencies, delays, or lost belongings. It helps cover costs that would otherwise come out of your own pocket, while also giving you access to expert support when things don’t go to plan
This works by covering events outside of your control that could disrupt your trip. You pay for a policy, and in return, you’re protected for specific situations outlined in your cover such as cancellations, medical treatment abroad, or travel delays.
Importantly, some covers such as cancellation due to illness, starts as soon as you take out your policy. That means if something happens before you travel, you may still be protected, which is why it’s important to arrange insurance as early as possible.
Every year, millions of people travel abroad for holidays, while most trips go smoothly, unexpected situations can happen and when they do, the costs can quickly add up. That’s why travel insurance is an essential part of planning any trip.
From emergency medical treatment overseas to cancellations, delays, or lost baggage, travel insurance helps protect you financially when things don’t go to plan. Medical expenses abroad can be especially expensive, and in some countries, even minor treatment or a short hospital stay can result in substantial bills. Travel insurance can help cover emergency medical costs, giving you access to support and treatment when you need it most.
For example, one British traveller required medical treatment in Spain following an accident, along with emergency repatriation back to the UK, resulting in costs of more than £124,000. In another case, a traveller injured in France still faced a bill of £16,000 even after using their GHIC card, as not all costs were covered, including returning home to the UK. In both situations, travel insurance helped cover the expenses. ¹
Travel insurance can also help protect the money you’ve invested in your trip. If you’re unexpectedly unable to travel due to illness, injury, or certain unforeseen circumstances affecting you, a close family member, or your accommodation arrangements, your policy may help cover cancellation costs. Many travellers also don’t realise that travel insurance can protect them before they travel, as long as their policy is already in place.
Having the right travel insurance in place means you can travel with greater confidence, knowing you’re protected against the unexpected before and during your trip.

Do I have to be a UK resident to purchase a policy?
Yes. All UsdawProtect Travel Insurance policies are only available to UK residents.
Am I covered if my airline cancels my flight?
Under UK law, if your flight is cancelled, your airline is usually required to offer you either a refund or an alternative flight. Depending on the circumstances, you may also be entitled to compensation directly from the airline.
However, travel disruption can still leave you out of pocket. With UsdawProtect Travel Insurance, you may be covered for additional transport and accommodation costs if your flight is cancelled and the airline is unable to provide an alternative departure within 24 hours. Cover limits, conditions and policy terms apply.
Are there any age restrictions on your travel insurance policies?
It is available for travellers aged 18 and over. There is no upper age limit for Single Trip policies, while Annual Multi-Trip policies are available for travellers up to age 85.
Also, travel insurance can only be purchased for anyone aged 17 or under by a parent or legal guardian, who must accept the policy terms and ensure the child is travelling with a responsible adult at all times.
I have a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Do I still need travel insurance?
Yes. A GHIC or EHIC card can provide access to some state healthcare in certain European countries, but it does not replace travel insurance. It won’t cover costs such as trip cancellation, travel disruption, lost baggage, private medical treatment, mountain rescue, or emergency repatriation back to the UK.
Travel insurance provides much broader financial protection before and during your trip.

UsdawProtect Travel Insurance also includes a Medical Warranty for declared pre-existing medical conditions. This means if your health changes after purchasing your policy, you won’t need to re-declare those changes and, if you remain fit to travel, your cover can continue without an unexpected additional premium. If you become unable to travel due to your condition, you may be eligible to claim for cancellation, subject to policy terms and conditions.
I have an annual travel insurance policy. Do I need to contact you every time I travel?
No. If you have an Annual Multi-Trip policy, you do not need to contact us before each trip, provided your travel falls within the policy limits, duration and destination cover selected.
Please make sure you check your policy wording for any restrictions or conditions that may apply.
How much cover do you provide for my belongings?

Depending on your policy, cover can include:
